Mission Statement

We build environmentally sensitive and energy efficient green homes with integrity and pride. Through this, we provide knowledge of sustainable living and everyday efficiency to our clients. Our goal is to make it possible for everyone to do their part in helping preserve our environment and pass down their knowledge to future generations.

About Us

My husband Colin and I started the business Jackson Contracting in 2005. The first house we designed and had built was a spec home in Durham, Maine. At that time we didn’t have enough money to build a house, let alone a green house. However, we went ahead and did it anyways. We put all the energy and resources we had into that first house. It was easily the biggest and most stressful investment we ever made. Through our hard work (and luck), the house sold the day it went on the market! That gave us the encouragement and drive to see this company along. Our goal in starting Jackson Contracting was to someday go “green”. With the profits from our first two spec houses we developed a new business, Jackson Built. This allowed us to align ourselves as the environmental and energy conscious construction company we had always wanted. Now, a few years later, we are among a group of Green builders belonging to the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) who promote innovative ideas in green construction. Jackson Built strives to provide the average person with a green built home, educate them on the resources and techniques available, and explain the benefits that a green house has for both the environment and their own back pocket.

It was not until Colin and I moved to Freeport Maine that we fully understood and realized what it meant to be “green”. In 2001 I started working at an all-natural beef farm. This non-profit public farm had been founded on the beliefs of sustainable agriculture; something I knew a lot about considering I myself am a fifth generation Maine farmer. However, I never consciously realized that my whole childhood life had been spent living this life style. I now believe that anyone who has ever lived on a farm has in some way touched on this way of living. Maybe not by thinking environmentally but by thinking monetarily. Farmers are very resourcefully and will constantly look for more then one way to use a product or conserve what they have. I see this “green” way of life comparing so much to everyday life. Green living should not be a fad; it should be the way we live and if not by choice, than by chance. The houses we design do not look like the green home you see in the glossy magazines. We build homes in traditional Maine style, giving them great character and charm. We aim to provide the everyday person with a beautiful home in which someone walking by might never realize it is a green home. Living “Green” is not in the look, it is in the lifestyle. Our pricing allows people to make the decision to go green for the same price as non-green built homes. We want the people who live in these houses to possibly be someone who have never heard of LEED or Green building. These are the kind of people we need to touch and show them that living green can be easy and affordable. It is these people who also need to educate themselves and future generations that this sustainable way of life is the best choice for all. However, don’t worry, we don’t discriminate against people who already share the desire and knowledge of “green” building and will gladly work with you as well.
